Ryan Dungey was born on December 4, 1989. His hometown is Belle Plaine, Minnesota, although these days he lives in Tallahassee, Florida, so he can take advantage of good weather for testing and train with 15-time AMA Champion Ricky Carmichael.
Personal:
- Trains with Ricky Carmichael at Camp Carmichael in Tallahassee. The two have formed a unique bond starting when Carmichael took Dungey under his wing in 2006 as Dungey moved to the pro ranks as Carmichael’s teammate for Factory Suzuki.
- It’s a family affair for the Dungeys: Father Troy, a former amateur motocross rider, is Ryan’s practice mechanic and stays at Ryan’s home in Tallahassee. Mother Michele oversees Ryan’s business and is the “team manager” for Ryan’s younger brother, Blake, 15, who is an up and coming amateur racer. Ryan’s eldest brother, Jade, 21, is the mechanic for pro rider Mike Sleeter.
- Ryan, a top Nike motocross athlete, has befriended Lance Armstrong and supports LIVESTRONG. He is currently featured in a national LIVESTRONG campaign (ESPN Mag, Marie Claire, Teen People, etc.) along with Armstrong.
- Ryan recently introduced and wears a revolutionary boot from Nike 6.0 called Nike the AirMX, which was created solely for him. It’s been the talk of the industry and has also gotten really great press outside of motocross, due in large part to Nike’s worldwide presence.
- He also just relaunched his website, www.ryandungey.com, and is available on Facebook, www.facebook.com/ryandungey, and Twitter www.twitter.com/ryandungey or @ryandungey.
Racing:
- Turned pro in summer of 2006 and was plucked from the B ranks (similar to being promoted from Single A of MLB) by moto legend Roger De Coster to ride for Factory Suzuki. In three years of 250/Lites competition, he racked up 2 championships (2009 SX and MX), one Motocross des Nations title for Team USA/2009, 12 SX wins and 6 MX wins.
- He making the much-anticipated jump to the 450 class, where he has opened the season with two wins (Phoenix and Anaheim2) and is currently tied atop the point standings after six rounds.
