SEATTLE (March 24, 2019) – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo helped make the conclusion of the 250SX main event a true nail biter as he went after the win in the final corner, finishing just 0.5 seconds behind the winner. His second-place finish helped him keep the red plate and maintain the points lead by 12 with three western regional rounds remaining. Teammate Garrett Marchbanks was showing his confidence and speed throughout the night on a tough and demanding track, eventually overcoming some mistakes to finish 12th in the main event.
The day started with Cianciarulo trying to figure out the toughest part of the track - the whoops. They were some of the hardest the riders had seen all year and giving a lot of them trouble. In the heat race, Cianciarulo raced out to the front quickly and took his third heat race win of the season.
The main event got off to a shaky start with riders going down all around the first and second turns, but Cianciarulo kept it on two wheels and started around fifth. It only took him a few laps to move into second and he tried to go to work on catching the leader. At times he was able to catch him but other times lappers would get in the way just enough to see the lead stretch out again. By the final lap, Cianciarulo had reeled the leader back in at the final turn, tried to make something happen but was forced to settle for second.
“I had a couple sections I was faster and maybe others that were slower,” said Cianciarulo. “Right in the middle of the race I got messed up by a lapper and it took me a little bit to overcome that. It was a tough track but I felt like I could have been better overall. We’ll go back to the drawing board for next week and hope to have a good triple crown in Houston.”
Rookie Garrett Marchbanks has shown improved confidence since his podium in San Diego, even if his results haven’t put that confidence on paper. His riding in his heat race proved just that as he was blitzing the whoops and making tough passes. In the main event he started outside the top 10 avoiding downed riders but made quick strides to settle into sixth. Just over halfway, Marchbanks ran into trouble and dropped down to as low as 16th, but didn’t give up and made it up to 12th by the checkered flag.
“Tonight I wanted to come out and ride hard, but the track made that even more challenging,” said Marchbanks. “If you got too aggressive, the track would come back and get you. Even the leaders proved that a little bit. I felt good for the most part but need to minimize mistakes, especially on a night like tonight where everyone was making them and I could have capitalized. It makes me more excited to come back next week and race.”
